Dan A. Penning is the founder of The Penning Group and the firm’s lead advisor. He is a nationally recognized expert in cottage law and succession planning for family legacy assets, including businesses and family farms. Dan is uniquely qualified in helping families realize their goals of perfecting and saving their assets for the next and future generations. He assists families by providing practical solutions to the often complicated problems associated with preserving the ownership, use and enjoyment of family legacy assets. Specifically, Dan designs the legal framework to accomplish his clients’ goals while negotiating every family’s unique, emotional and complex relationship issues. He has consulted and prepared estate plans and asset succession plans for families with assets throughout the United States and abroad.
Dan also has deep knowledge and experience in business law, and for nearly three decades he has advised numerous corporate clients, helping them successfully navigate difficult discussions related to succession planning, business sales and acquisitions.
With extensive trial experience, Dan has successfully defended appeals before both state and federal appeals courts. He is admitted to practice before all state and federal courts in Michigan, as well as the United States Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals. He is an elite member of the Fellows of the Michigan State Bar Foundation, an honor reserved for only five percent of the active members of the State Bar of Michigan.
Dan has received numerous accreditations and awards for his work, including the most elite “AV” rating from Martindale-Hubbell, identifying Dan as preeminent in his area of practice. For the past four years, Detroit and dbusiness magazines have recognized Dan as a Five-Star wealth manager, an award reserved for less than seven percent of nominees.
Passionate about giving back, Dan has volunteered for many nonprofit and civic boards, including the Farmington Family YMCA, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Farmington-Farmington Hills Chamber of Commerce, Farmington Planning Commission and currently is a member of the Suttons Bay-Bingham Township Fire Board Authority.
Dan has also served as a lead instructor for Oakland University’s Certificate Program in Personal Financial Planning, and he is regularly called upon to provide continuing education to other legal professionals.
